Frank Woodruff Buckles (born February 1, 1901, died February 27, 2011) was the last surviving United States World War I Veteran. He was born in Bethany, Missouri, in 1901 and enlisted in the United States Army, in August 1917, at the age of 16. He was sent to Europe aboard the R.M.S. Carpathia (which was the ship which rescued the survivors of the Titanic, in 1912) and spent the War as a Motorcycle and Ambulance Driver. He served in the Army until January 1920. He was once again caught in war when Japan invaded the U.S. Territory of The Philippines, where he worked for a shipping company, in Manila. He was detained by the Japanese and held as a prisoner at Los Banos Prison Camp, from 1942 to 1945. He returned to the United States and married Audrey Mayo, in 1946. He lived at Gap View Farm, in Charles Town, West Virginia, and was the Honorary Chairman of the World War I Memorial Foundation. Frank Buckles reached the rank of Corporal during World War One and for his service was awarded the World War I Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation of Germany Medal and he was also awarded by French President Jacques, the French Legion of Honor. His death signifies the true end of an era. May He Rest In Peace / Que En Paz Descanse. 
Christina Taylor Green, age 9 (born on September 11th, 2001) was killed in the shooting yesterday of Congress Woman Giffords, of Arizona, which left a total of 6 dead and many wounded. Christina was invloved in many school activites and had recently recieved her first Communion at St. Odilia's Catholic Church in Tucson, Arizona. She had recently been elected to her schools student council and was interested in the workings of the Government and decided to attend the event with a family friend. 
Democratic Congress Woman Gabrielle Giffords (born June 8th, 1970) was shot today at a Political Event in Arizona. She is the Congressional Representative for the 8th District. There were also at least 13 other people shot and wounded during the attack, 6 of which have died including a Federal Judge and a 9 year old girl named Christina Taylor Green (born on September 11th, 2001). The "alleged" gunman Jared Lee Loughner was captured and is in Police custody. He is described as a white male, age 22 and is a self proclaimed "leftist and liberal". I have been "waiting and waiting" for the production of electric cars which are affordable and have been watching General Motors (Stock Symbol > GM) new Chevy Volt with a view to eventually buy one. I have been fascinated by the concept of electric cars since I was very young, as well as solar power. I remember the late 70's when I was a boy and sitting for what seemed like hours (and actually were) to fill up at the gas station during the Iranian Hostage Crisis. I also had the "pleasure" of Hurricane Katrina where it took me 4 hours (yes, 4 hours) waiting in a line to get a tank of gasoline. I also like the electric car for two other important reasons, the first is it lowers our dependence on foreign oil supplies and the second is it helps the environment in general. This is a win-win scenario for everyone and although the price of a Chevy Volt is approx. $40,280, to me it is worth it especially as the price of gasoline and the price of a barrel of oil go HIGHER and HIGHER every passing day. I can envision all the people who now have solar panels on their homes "filling up" their Chevy Volt, just by plugging it into their electric socket. I hope to do the same. Why should I give my money to the enemies of America and her Freedoms every single time I gas up my car ? Why ? When I can use the unlimited supply of FREE Solar Power to do the same thing ? I know what your thinking > the car costs $40,280 and a home solar array (panels, hook up to the grid etc.) will cost a few thousand more BUT once that expense is taken into account the car will start to pay itself off immediately. It is actually a better "deal" than buying a $40,000 car and watching it deteriorate and lose value the second you drive it off the car lot. I am saving my pennies and dimes, LOL LOL and have an eye out for a new Chevy Volt. Do you really think the price of oil wont sky rocket AGAIN ? Do you really think we will have $2 to $3 a gallon gasoline forever ? Do you think our Middle East oil supply is safe and secure ? I don't and that is why I am buying a new Chevy Volt !
This Cuban Stamp from 1974 is of the now extinct Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes Migratorius), known in Cuba as the "Paloma Migratoria". They are Cuban accounts from the 18th century of Passenger Pigeons being sold in the Havana food markets. The Passenger Pigeon would reach Cuba in its migration but never did so in any great numbers, as far as the few reports that exist attest. The Passenger Pigeon was hunted into extinction in North America. The last known Passenger Pigeon in captivity (named Martha) was kept in the Cinncinati, Ohio Zoo where she died on September 1st, 1914. There is a Memorial Statue at the Cinncinati Zoo which was put up in her honor and that of her once numerous and beautiful species.
